Mayfield students are required to take two years of Physical Education. The majority of students graduate with more than the two years of credit due to the fact that P.E. credits are given for participation in team sports and Dance Conservatory.
Physical Education classes emphasize physical fitness, women’s health issues, fundamental skill development, rules, etiquette, history of sports and social development. The units include activities such as yoga, balance ball workouts, running and power walking, strength training, calisthenics and circuit training. All classes are designed to provide the knowledge and skills involved in maintaining a healthy mind and body. This is done through a wide variety of individual, team, recreational and competitive experiences. Team and individual sports include activities such as tennis, volleyball, badminton, indoor soccer, lacrosse, track and field, indoor softball and basketball. In addition, students learn the relationship between nutrition and good health, total fitness and weight control.
The Physical Education Department has developed a system of assessments that gauges the student’s physical fitness and motivation. The assessments include fitness circuit testing and flexibility training, heart rate monitoring during aerobic activity, timed runs and power walks, along with written tests of rules and fundamental sports skills.
All students are eligible to participate in the interscholastic sports program as well as the Physical Education courses. We have seen many students develop as athletes, leaders and self-confident individuals in our Physical Education and athletic programs.
